My assignment for Media Studies this week was to make a narrative sound pr
oject. I was in a group of four with Ryan Ugalde, Aidan Tajalli and Bezalel Sabu.
The story my group came up with was a player getting ready, and playing in a basketball game. We thought we should get audio of the player getting dressed in the locker room, walking out to the court, as well as the player playing in the game with the crowd cheering them on. Since there is only audio and no video, my group had to heavily exaggerate the sounds we were looking for.
To start off we got audio of the player walking into the locker room, and opening the doors. For this we made our footsteps very loud, sounding as if we are stomping, to fully get the effect of us walking. You then can hear them place their bag down, unzip the pockets, and rummage through their clothes. You then can hear them put their jersey on, put the bag in their locker, and walk out onto the court.
Next is the player warming up for the game and bouncing the ball, and then the player playing in the basketball game. You can hear the ball bouncing and the shoes squeaking, for this we went into the gymnasium and played basketball ourselves so we can get an authentic sound. We started off with no background and crowd noise to show it was before the game. When the game started we added crowd noise we edited in, so the viewer knows the game has started.
For the basketball game we added the crowd noise over us dribbling the basketball. We made sure you can hear the ref blow their whistle, so the audience knows the game has started.
At the end of the game, we wanted to add audio of a buzzer beater shot. For this we recorded us dribbling and shooting shots, as we added audio of a buzzer beater going off. While we were in the gymnasium, we asked the middle schoolers to help us get authentic crowd noise. We had them count down saying" 3...2...1" then cheering as the game ended. We chose to do this as we liked authentic crowd noise over some sounds we found online.
Overall I think my group did a very good job with the Sound Analysis Project. I think anyone that hears the audio will easily know what is going on. With all of the sound clips of the basketball dribbling and the crowd cheering, I think we made it very easy to guess the scene we tried making.
